This for me is one of the most interesting graves in the graveyards. Almost an essay on top of it consisting of a rant against the man who caused these covenanters to be executed. Also in this graveyard – a minute or so to your right as this picture looks- is the grave of William Marshall, the so called and very ancient gypsy king – worth a look.

    • “This coming 16 June, Radio 4 will be a wall-to-wall Joycefest…” June 3, 2012
As The Observer’s Alex Clark notes This coming 16 June, Radio 4 will be a wall-to-wall Joycefest, kicking off at 9am and running until midnight: a new, five-and-a-half hour dramatisation of Ulysses, narrated by Stephen Rea and starring Henry Goodman, Niamh Cusack and Andrew Scott, will be punctuated by broadcasts by Mark Lawson in Dublin [...]

    • Ships, and the Chinese goods that sail on them… June 2, 2012
I bicycled along the harbour shore in Titanic Quarter today in an unseasonably cold breeze. As always, my eyes were drawn to the ships at dock on the other side of the harbour. These ugly brutes, these unsung workhorses of the maritime world, are the capillaries through which a huge proportion of international trade flows. [...]

    • Health reforms slowly being revealed June 2, 2012
Slowly, almost painfully so, the health reforms are beginning to be revealed. The Compton Review stated that each of the Health and Social Care Trusts was to bring forward proposals for hospital services by June 2012. It is slightly unclear if that was to be the start or the end of this month: however, rumours [...]

    • Fiscal Compact Referendum: A comment round up… June 2, 2012
Is a class based politics emerging? Jason O’Mahony seems to think so. Complaints that it was the middle class and rural voters wot one it against the poorer classes is part of a limiting contempt that some sections of Irish politics have for the people who always broker political power in the Irish state. - [...]

    • Bilderberg 2012: “Like a corporate cross between Santa Claus and a big friendly squid.” June 1, 2012
It’s just as well that Ireland said ‘Yes’ to the Fiscal Treaty.  I can only imagine the embarrassed silences Irish Finance Minister, Michael Noonan, would have experienced this weekend if the result had gone the other way.  Where is Michael?  He’s in the US.  Virginia, since you ask.  In Chantilly.  At the 60th annual Bilderberg [...] […]

    • #EUref Keeping McKenna alive by not pushing it too far June 1, 2012
Here’s an interesting snippet from the ever alert Deaglan de Breadun: The concept of “neutral information” is the subject of regular debate. Elements on the No side contemplated taking injunctions over the website and booklet and information leaflet distributed throoughout the State. They backed-off, however. Had they lost, it would have meant substant […]

    • #Euref: The Ayes have it. But do they really think it’s all over? June 1, 2012
So the polls had it spot on. The final tallies were… Yes (60.3%): 955091; No (39.7%) 629088… But as has been noted throughout the day, Europe is no where near resolving the actual problems… Meanwhile no one in Brussels is thinking about anything other than the lengthening shadow of the Spanish banking crisis… One thing [...]

    • Minister feather beds middle classes rather than tackle fuel poverty… June 1, 2012
This is a fascinating little vignette from Julia Paul and Hearts and Minds (again) on the DSD’s decision not to implement a Green New Deal package, because, in the fairly accurate analysis of SF MLA Phil Flanagan, it was just too innovative for senior civil servants at DSD. This is interesting, not least because it [...]

    • Hearts and Minds: Starting a conversation about having a conversation? June 1, 2012
This exchange from Hearts and Minds last night has two, what I’d call, very very weird moments. One is when Mike Nesbitt tells Noel Thompson to ‘go and talk to his producer’ about the conditions under which he has agreed to do the interviewer. And two is really just the way he stumps Declan Kearney [...]

    • I want Presbyterians to be … June 1, 2012
In the end, this year’s Presbyterian General Assembly was less headline-grabbing than the recent Church of Ireland Synod. However the outgoing and incoming moderators did tackle some good issues in their addresses on Monday evening. Last weekend I wrote a short opinion piece to accompany Thursday morning’s News Letter coverage of the General Asse […]

    • Your Print Off and Keep Guide to Following Tally Information in the Irish Stability Pact Referendum May 31, 2012
Voters in the Republic went to the polls for a referendum on EU related issues today for the third time in 4 years. Although polls have just closed, the result will probably not be announced until well into Friday afternoon. However, those involved in the various campaigns will have a sense of how the result [...]

    • Catholic Post-Primary Education Reform: “I am anxious to try to build consensus on the way forward” May 31, 2012
Following on from the Northern Ireland Commission for Catholic Education (NICCE) belated publication of its Post-Primary Review Strategic Regional Report, individual dioceses are bringing forward their suggestions.  The first one out of the blocks appears to concern Catholic maintained schools in Londonderry. The Derry Diocese Administrator, Monsignor Eamon […]

So before the actual result of the Referendum on the Fiscal Treaty is announced, here’s a run down of  how I think each of the parties have fared. It’s less a beauty line up, and more an attempt to grade them in terms of how they have managed to improve their positioning as a result.  Finally, you’ll [...]

    • Bilderberg 2012: “Are you here for the brunch?” May 30, 2012
The Guardian’s Charlie Skelton is in Chantilly, Virginia, ahead of the, whisper it, annual Bilderberg conference - “a small, flexible, informal and off-the-record international forum in which different viewpoints can be expressed and mutual understanding enhanced”.  As he says at the Big G’s US News blog Everything’s set.
